The item on multiple age-discrimination claims (see [2008] Gazette, 4 December, 4) seems slightly one-sided.

Only one lawyer is quoted as representative of ‘lawyers’ who are worried about scams. It is likely too that people facing age discrimination may find it widespread and over multiple jurisdictions, so they would have the right to claim in each part of the country they were discriminated against. Use of ‘newly qualified’ and ‘career-oriented’ as code words in advertisements attempt to scare people away from applying for positions. One agency that advertised on the internet last week even used ‘young’, until it was pointed out that this might not be passable. In the Gazette item, Gordon Turner mentioned going to look at paper-based records of a tribunal office in Bury St Edmunds. He was fortunate that it granted him access to paper-based records. When I have asked the Central London Employment Tribunal for similar access, the request was denied.
