Law firms were last week urged to adopt fair trade policies as part of Fair Trade Fortnight.

Fiona Gooch, head of private sector policy at fair trade promoters Traidcraft, told delegates at a Law Society event that a fair trade policy could be important in showing clients a firm's attitude towards corporate social responsibility.

She said law firms should insist on fair trade products in their canteens, vending machines, and hospitality, and could encourage staff to use more fair trade products.

Ms Gooch added that firms could do pro bono legal work to help improve the impact of mainstream trade on poverty in developing countries.

Birmingham firm Anthony Collins last week pledged to select fair trade suppliers wherever possible and magic circle firm Allen & Overy set up a stand showcasing fair trade products.
