An initiative aimed at recruiting young people to promote the rule of law was announced by the attorney general today.

Under the Young Ambassadors Programme, which will run from January to June next year, 12 young people will take part in expert-led workshops, visits to ‘key’ legal institutions and a residential weekend at Cumberland Lodge, an education charity that helps develop future leaders.

The ambassadors will design and pitch ideas to the law officers, Hermer and solicitor general Ellie Reeves before delivering their projects to the public.

Richard Hermer KC said the programme aimed to ‘listen to fresh perspectives’ and ‘empower the next generation to lead conversations about justice in their communities’. He added: ‘The rule of law impacts everyone, and young people must have a real voice in how we promote and protect it. I’m excited to work alongside these ambassadors as they bring their creativity and passion to this vital work.’

A spokesperson for Cumberland Lodge added: ‘We look forward to welcoming the ambassadors and providing them with space to collaborate, learn from one another, and develop the innovative campaigns that will shape how their generation understands justice.’

The programme is open to all young people aged 18-25 from England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland and applicants will be assessed against four criteria: commitment to public service and the rule of law, communications skills and experience, community leadership or impact and creativity in reaching new audiences.

Applications for the roles are now open.
