As a fellow conveyancer, I sympathise with Mark Williams over his frustrations (see [2007] Gazette, 20 September, 16). Unfortunately, while what he suggests is total common sense, it will founder on the smug self-satisfaction which passes for Land Registry policy.
Having pushed for the introduction of electronic discharge, the Registry shows no interest in policing the working of the system. This is only one example of it being far more interested in trumpeting having met its own self-imposed standards than in meeting the legitimate expectations of practitioners.
Sadly, this will remain the case as long as it obsesses more over whether its telephones are answered in three rings than in addressing real issues such as that highlighted by Mr Williams.
