High street firms need to change the way they deliver their services and run their practices more like businesses to survive in the post-Legal Services Act world, delegates at the 2020 Lawyers Group conference were told last week.

Joe Reevy, director of consultancy firm Best Practice Online, said the profession's understanding of business economics was poor and advised lawyers to acquire the necessary skills to run their practices better.

He added that the changing legal landscape presented an excellent opportunity for solicitors, but the latter needed to spend more time working out how their clients wanted services to be delivered. The most important step was to get 'the right people on the bus'. He added: 'If you've got people who aren't going to make the necessary changes in the business they will stop you succeeding.'
