As 'baby boom' generation lawyers in the US approach retirement, the ABA has launched a plan to keep them busy by providing pro bono legal advice to local communities. Incoming association president Karen Mathis has made the Atticus Network a major plank of her year's tenure. The network has at its centre a Web site where recently retired US lawyers can find 'meaningful volunteer and service activities'. Ms Mathis said that over the next ten to 15 years, some 400,000 of the country's 900,000 private practice lawyers are scheduled to hit pensionable age. Ms Mathis called on them to provide up to 50 hours of pro bono work a year after they retire.
