The leading lights of the social welfare and public affairs charity world gathered recently in London to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Citizenship Foundation - the almost personal baby of solicitor Liberal Democrat, Lord Phillips of Sudbury - and the 30th year of the Law Society Charity.

One of the highlights of the evening was a presentation by a group of enthusiastic students from Northolt High School in north-west London, who had recently taken part in a mooting competition.

During his speech at the event, Department for Constitutional Affairs minister David Lammy warmly congratulated the teenagers for their achievement in finishing first in the moot.

Beaming at the youngsters as only youngish politicians can when attempting to illustrate just how down with the kids they can get, Mr Lammy implored: 'You did finish first, didn't you?' An uncomfortable pause followed, before a tentative voice squeaked: 'Fourth, actually.' Better briefing next time, minister.
