CPS duo collect gongs

NEW YEAR'S HONOURS: Legal rowers are recognised

Beneath the headline-grabbing Olympians in the New Year's honours list - including two law students - the contributions of others in the legal world were also recognised.Two Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) solicitors were awarded OBEs: John Drew and Eileen Stewart.

Mr Drew, branch crown prosecutor for Avon, and Ms Stewart have been with the CPS since it began in 1986.

Ms Stewart has been involved in victim support and has been a training officer since 1990.Anthony Trew, a consultant at City firm Richards Butler, was awarded an OBE for services to British commercial interests and the community in Abu Dhabi.

He opened the firm's Abu Dhabi office in 1978 - and is still there.Meanwhile, barrister Rosalind Wright, director of the Serious Fraud Office since 1997, received the Companion, Order of the Bath.Anne Owers, director of human rights organisation Justice since 1992, was awarded a CBE.

Before Justice, Ms Owers was general secretary of the Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants (JCWI).

Ms Owers said the award was a recognition of the work done by Justice and the JCWI which was 'often unpopular and not well resourced'.Law students Louis Attrill and James Cracknell were awarded MBEs for services to rowing following their Olympic success.

Mr Attrill was with Britain's victorious men's eight while Mr Cracknell appeared in Sir Steve Redgrave's coxless four.Sue Allen
