Deals of the week - 20.06.2002

Best farmed deal: Marlow firm Moorcrofts acted for Reed Business Information on a joint venture with on-line company First 4 Farming - advised in-house - to develop an agricultural information and trading Web site.

Healthiest deal: Linklaters acted for Capio AB on the acquisition of 20 of its UK hospitals for 250 million by Nikko Principal Investments, advised by Allen & Overy.

The hospitals are to be leased back to Capio on a 30-year basis, in what is believed to be the first time a sale and leaseback structure has been agreed in the private hospital sector.

Best kitted deal: Newcastle-based Dickinson Dees represented Nova International, the company run by former track star Brendan Foster, on the sale of its sports brand View From for an undisclosed sum to Marks & Spencer, which was advised by Slaughter and May.

Most odds-on deal: London firm Olswang acted for Ladbrokes in a deal with Manchester United to provide betting services to fans via the club's Web site and at Old Trafford.

United was advised by James Chapman & Co.

Crunchiest deal: CMS Cameron McKenna acted for private equity firm Bridgepoint Capital on the proposed sale of the Golden Wonder Group - including the brands Wheat Crunchies, Nik Naks and Bugles - to Longulf, advised by Denton Wilde Sapte, for an undisclosed sum.

Under a separate agreement, Golden Wonder's Wotsits brand will become part of the Walkers business, which is owned by Frito-Lay, part of PepsiCo International.

Baker & McKenzie acted for Walkers, while PepsiCo was advised in-house; this deal is subject to review by the Office of Fair Trading.

Most screened deal: Manchester firm Fox Brooks Marshall advised entertainment company Apollo on the 23 million buyout of 11 cinemas and four bingo halls from Clear Channel Entertainment, represented by Hammond Suddards Edge.

Best connected deal: Mayer Brown Rowe & Maw acted for Cable & Wireless on its agreement to purchase Guernsey Telecoms from the States of Guernsey for 22.5 million.

The seller's agent, CIBC World Markets, was represented by US firm Squire Sanders & Dempsey, and Guernsey-based Ozannes advised on local law.

Most tuned-in deal: Lovells is advising the Guardian Media Group on the 44.5 million purchase of the share capital of Jazz FM, represented by DLA.

Windiest deal: Taylor Joynson Garrett acted for digital media distributors Tornado Group on the 5 million acquisition of Internet broadcast provider Virtu, advised by Berwin Leighton Paisner.
