Derby is to be the third location for a community legal advice centre (CLAC). A joint funding initiative of the Legal Services Commission (LSC) and Derby City Council, it will bring together civil legal aid funded by the LSC and social welfare services provided by the council. A tender will run in the autumn with a view to opening in summer 2007. Tender winners will gain a three-year contract to run the centre. However, the LSC's strategy is that other providers' social welfare legal aid contracts may be reduced or not renewed in areas where there is a centre. The first two CLACs will be in Leicester and Gateshead.
