DONT BANK ON CHAPS ; ;The transfer of funds by the Clearing House Automatic Payments System (CHAPS) on completions especially when a chain is involved continues to deteriorate. Ones whole day is often taken over chasing either funds which have not arrived or checking that banks have actually transmitted funds when requested. ;Banks do not seem to have the will to create a system whereby funds can be guaranteed to arrive within a short period half an hour should be ample, given all the technological advances of recent years. ;All the banks seem prepared to guarantee is that the monies will arrive on the same working day. This simply is not good enough when there is a chain of several transactions. ;The increasing number of lenders who send mortgage advances by CHAPS has not helped. They have even been known to fail to put an advance in the system at all, causing untold stress to the conveyancers involved, not to mention the clients all waiting to move. ;Howard Wilson, Tunnard Crosfield, Ripon, Yorkshire ; ; ; ;
