City giant Allen & Overy has told the government that there needs to be a broader strategic response to the issue of diversity in the legal profession. Senior partner Guy Beringer told delegates that the growth in diversity league tables has had a positive influence, but 'one needs to also step beyond that and look more broadly at access', such as going into schools and offering bursaries. 'I haven't had a reply yet,' he said. 'I think my letter has rather baffled them.' Mr Beringer added that Allen & Overy had decided against establishing a diversity committee or officer for fear of pushing the issue to the side. Diversity is the responsibility of the firm's global board, and Mr Beringer is charged with driving forward the work.
