The irony that a government stacked with pseudo human rights lawyers is seeking to dumb down criminal defence law has not gone unnoticed by us practitioners. Small private firms are easily the most efficient sector in criminal law.

We should all just walk out now before we either go bust or become another government department. We should also seek to be answerable to a separate legal authority, as the Law Society has proven itself so far removed from our work as to be pointless to us.

I see that the very well-connected Lord Carter is now to work out how to slash £240 million from the prison budget whilst making room for thousands more and 'improving' services. He would be better off thinking about how his own report came in late, over budget and without proper consideration. If he did my job, he would quit in a week.
