Egg on the face

DLA, formerly known as Dibb Lupton Alsop (the City firm which is big in the regions), officially opened its new London offices last week.

Managing partner Nigel Knowles was the star attraction, winning approval for his choice of art - 'I chose it and if you didn't like it, I didn't choose it' - and his refreshingly frank comments about DLA's rivals.

The new office boasts the best view of City giant Clifford Chance - a point which was not lost on the guests.

But the DLA lawyers brazened it out.

'From here, we look down on Clifford Chance', was the usual response to comments.

Spirits were high and there was much festivity around the champagne ice sculptures.

But Mr Knowles was no ice maiden.

He happily autographed a photograph of himself with a word to readers of the Gazette: 'To all those who still want to talk to us, Nige.' Unfortunately, the following morning, Mr Knowles had second thoughts about publishing the picture, as his words of encouragement to potential recruits and merger partners were scribbled all over his face.
