The long-running campaign to persuade the authorities in New York to recognise the qualifications of solicitors who do not have law degrees has received a boost after the New York State Bar Association's committee on cross-border legal practice invited the Law Society to reopen discussions on this issue. Such solicitors are prevented from taking the state bar exam to re-qualify as New York attorneys because they do not have three years of legal education; the only option for them presently is to obtain a US law degree.
