I note that if I wanted to apply to be a QC, I would have to pay a £2,500 application fee (see [2006] Gazette, 15 December, 1). The sum does not bother me so much as the principle. Should I (should indeed all employers) now seek to charge job applicants for the privilege of seeking employment? Maybe it could be on a sliding scale, starting with a modest amount for the poorest candidates, to compensate me for the effort of flinging their CVs into the bin. I suppose if I work it right it could be a nice little earner. I could even forget about clients and become a full-time interviewer.
