Eyeing a skinful

The term glassy-eyed took on new meaning in a recent US case against a man accused of drink-driving.

A police officer claimed that Michael McMillan's breath smelt of alcohol, his speech was slurred and his eyes were 'glassy'.

In response, McMillan's lawyer promptly reached into his client's eye socket and pulled out to general amazement what was, fortunately, a glass eye.

But the stunt was to no avail: 'It's only a glass eye,' the judge later told the jury with admirable attention to detail.

'The police officer said "eyes".' Sentencing McMillan to 90 days, the judge said he felt sorry he had a glass eye but that this was 'no defence'.
