As a solicitor who has taken time out to raise a family, I have experienced first hand the less than enthusiastic reception women solicitors receive when they want to return to the legal profession (see [2004] Gazette,5 August, 30).
Often, those who continue with their careers are under pressure to prove their dedication and commitment to the job by denying the reality of their other responsibilities.
Part of the reason this age-old problem continues to exist in the legal profession is undoubtedly the over-supply of lawyers. There are simply too many solicitors qualifying every year. Those who are a little older, or who have childcare responsibilities and want some flexibility, become expendable.
Many talented and well-qualified solicitors are lost to the profession as a result. Now that I have set up my own firm, I am hoping to be able to offer opportunities to such solicitors. Often, working from home will appeal to solicitors who want more autonomy and flexibility, and I am looking for just such solicitors.
