One of the more interesting statistical facts to emerge from the European Bar Presidents conference in Vienna was just how varied in numerical terms is the legal profession across Europe.

The UK remains the big player with a total of 156,493 solicitors and barristers spread across its three jurisdictions.

Following are Italy and Spain, with 140,000 and 138,367 respectively (however, their numbers are fudged by the national bars in those countries counting all law graduates as lawyers).

The next real major player is Germany with 116,305 practising lawyers.

And then there is a dramatic fall down to the 40,775 lawyers practising in France.

At the other end is Liechtenstein which boasts 107 lawyers, meaning that the country's entire legal profession could almost meet up down the pub for a drink.
