A former partner in a magic circle firm has filed what is believed to be the first age discrimination claim brought against a UK practice since new rules came into force in October last year.
Peter Bloxham, previously head of insolvency at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, was one of around 30 lawyers who opted to retire from the partnership last year on a full pension, rather than remain a partner, but with significantly reduced retirement benefits following the firm's restructuring.
In a statement, Jo Keddie, the employment specialist at London firm Dawsons representing Mr Bloxham, said: 'Peter Bloxham can confirm that he has lodged a claim against his former firm, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, on the grounds of age discrimination. Since the details of the claim are presently the subject of employment tribunal proceedings, it would be inappropriate to pass any further comment at this time.'
Freshfields declined to comment.
