Give us a break

Lawyers exaggerating their achievements? As unlikely as this is, Obiter fears that Cheltenham firm Willans may have fallen into this hubristic trap.

The eight-partner firm has sent out a press release trumpeting their new arrival, company and commercial assistant Guy Hopson, who has joined the team 'after impressing us with his ability, drive and enthusiasm' during his training period.

Nothing wrong with that, you may think, and indeed, bravo Guy.

However, the press release then goes on to claim that 'Guy, 24, is one of the youngest lawyers in the country to qualify' - because, apparently, he 'went straight through university without a break'.

Far be it for Obiter to pick holes in well-thought-out marketing strategies, but surely several thousand solicitors have qualified after going through university 'without a break'? Next up - the firm with the only solicitor to qualify in a month with an 'r' in its name.
