Give wigs the chop

I was dismayed to see that the Lord Chancellor, Lord Irvine, is proposing that solicitor-advocates be permitted to don wigs - not worn seriously other than by the bald or balding since the 18th century - when appearing in the Crown Court in the 21st century (see [2001] Gazette, 5 July, 1).Perhaps my opinion stems from the navety of my relative youth (28) or is it a reflection of the fast-moving times in which I live.

But it would surely be preferable for the Lord Chancellor to ensure once and for all the disposal by the Bar of its collective wig.

Thus parity of arms would be ensured.Remember, solicitors who were once loath to dispose of their quills now embrace computers as indisputable progress.Joss Alcraft, Hughes Watton, London
