A growing firm hovering around the top 50 has recorded rising profits and turnover in healthy annual accounts.

Birketts LLP, which started in the east of England but has expanded into London and the south east, reported an operating profit of £24.4m (up by 9%) and turnover of £77.6m (up 12%) for the year ended 31 May 2022.

The firm said that £24.6m of profits would be made available for division among the members.

Introducing the annual report, senior partner James Austin and partner Chris Schwer said the results represented another strong year for the firm.

They added: ‘The firm’s reputation continues to grow both regionally and nationally and we will look to enhance this further in the coming year. The property and corporate divisions performed particularly well over the last 12 months, along with a strong performance by the private client division.’

The firm announced earlier this month that it had merged with Batchelors Solicitors, based in Kent and London, having agreed a similar arrangement with London firm EC3 Legal LLP last year.

According to the 2021/22 accounts, Birketts had net assets of £28.3m, up from £26m the year before. Cash reserves increased from £5.1m to £7.4m.

The firm’s headcount has continued to rise, from 680 to 744. Of these, 432 are described as ‘client servicing’. The firm’s membership increased during the year from 77 to 89.

The accounts also show that the amount of profit attributable to the member with the largest entitlement came down, falling 6% to £591,000.
