Herbert Smith and Gleiss court ahead of possible marriage

City firm Herbert Smith has unveiled a 'formal relationship' with leading German practice Gleiss Lutz Hootz Hirsch ahead of a possible merger. The two firms will co-operate in dealing with clients, pitching for work, recruitment and other areas but remain separate.Richard Fleck, Herbert Smith's practice development partner, said: 'Both firms recognise a merger as a likely or probable outcome as the relationship develops.'However, he was keen to stress that not merging meant the two firms would be able to concentrate on client service rather than the internal upheavals caused by merger.Martin Diller, Gleiss Lutz's managing partner, said: 'We are committed to building a long-term relationship with Herbert Smith and are confident that our combined strengths give us the ability to take advantage of the growing opportunities for providing global legal advice.'
