The new Law Society chief executive for representation is planning to build a £4 million 'fighting fund' to spend on new services for members of the professional body.

In his first report to the Law Society Council, Desmond Hudson said the 2006 budget is estimated to have been under-spent.

He said that to raise the £4 million, the aim is to hold the budget for 2007 flat and ask for 8.5% savings 'across the piece' - including from the Society's sections and groups - in the 2007 business plan. The practising certificate (PC) fee would then be kept static, at least for representation.

Mr Hudson said: 'This will enable us to take an informed decision about where we put these resources and what new services we offer to members. There are inefficiencies and fat that can be taken out.'

He is also looking to increase commercial income but said the cost savings are a key first step.
