IBA aggrieved by Sri Lanka's refusal of delegation visas
The International Bar Association has expressed 'grave concern' at the Sri Lankan government's refusal to issue visas to members of a delegation it was sending to report on rule of law issues in the country. The group - including former Bar Council chairman Lord Brennan QC - was to meet the Sri Lankan minister of justice this week, as well as top politicians, judges and lawyers. The delegation was convened after Sir Lankan president HE Kumarathunga called a referendum of constitutional reform.
She reportedly said that should the referendum come out in favour of replacing the constitution, the government would do so without reference to the parliament.
This would contravene the current constitution.Lord Brennan said: 'The delegation's visit would have led to a report on the facts of the present situation.
Any conclusions would have been independent and objective.'
