Why is it that solicitors seem to think that they are above the law and that it is not necessary to practise what they preach?

As an eight-year-qualified solicitor who was employed as an associate partner specialising in commercial and residential property, and employment law, I am sure that I am not alone at having been made redundant recently. What concerns me is the fact that this was carried out with a complete disregard for employment law legislation.

By this, I mean that I received no more than five hours’ notice and the redundancy took effect immediately. I have my own views as to why it was carried out in such a manner, views which unfortunately I cannot share.

I fail to see how any firm can justify such treatment. I also do not consider that to plead a complete ignorance of the legislation is a satisfactory excuse.

What I will say is that any firms that do not have sufficient human resources support, and are considering making redundancies, should spend some money on obtaining the requisite advice before any such action is considered.
