Instructions of the Week 10.05.2002

City firm Denton Wilde Sapte kicks off this week's new instructions after bagging the mandate to act as sole adviser to the London Borough of Camden on the redevelopment of the King's Cross area, which is expected to take ten to 15 years to complete.

The brief includes advising the council on its negotiations with the developer, on the planning applications (including environment impact assessments), listed building requirements, and section 106 agreements, which deal with planning obligations.

Birmingham firm Wragge & Co has won out over six other firms to be appointed as GlaxoSmith-Kline's sole adviser on IT and telecommunications issues.

The global healthcare company said it had a large volume of work for Wragges to handle.

Bryn Thomas, a senior counsel at Glaxo, said: 'What marked out Wragge & Co was its impressive track record in IT and telecoms work, the strength in depth of its technology group, its attention to client care and the chemistry between our people and theirs.'

The General Social Care Council has appointed City firm Field Fisher Waterhouse to handle the legal issues for the first phase of its work in developing a new regulatory framework for social care.

The council is responsible for registering 1.2 million people working in social care in England.

Following its appointment last week to advise North Glamorgan NHS Trust on a private public partnership (PPP) to replace St Tydfil's Hospital and Hollies Health Centre in Merthyr Tydfil, west country firm Bevan Ashford has also been instructed on the 8 million PPP to relocate the acute mental health beds at St Tydfil's to Prince Charles Hospital.

Eversheds has been appointed the sole employment law adviser to Comet Group following a formal tender and pitch process.

The firm will act via two teams: one based in Cambridge for head office issues, and matters arising in Wales and the south of England; and one based in Leeds for issues arising in the north of England and Scotland.
