Justice needs truth
Mark Stephens is, of course, correct in his analysis of the cynical nature of society these days and, consequent upon this modern acceptance of lies and lying, the significance (in legal terms) of the conviction in the Jeffrey Archer case (see [2001] Gazette, 16, 9 August). It is the current challenge for the legal profession and the courts to 'customise' the rules of court, rules of procedure, rules of evidence that create the 'artificial environment' in our British courts, so as always - or as often as possible- to ensure that the liars and the cheats get found out for, without truth, there is no justice.Jonathan Ripman, Gotelee & Goldsmith, Ipswich
