City firm Kennedys is to open an office in Madrid next month after agreeing a merger with long-time ally Araúz de Robles y Vélez Abogados (ARV).

The five fee-earner practice will be led by partner Jesús Velez, formerly of ARV. It includes partner José-María Araúz, who also joins from ARV, and Alex Guillamont, a Kennedys solicitor who is qualified to practise in Spain. Kennedys has had an association with ARV since 2000.

The new office will focus on insurance, reinsurance and commercial law, as well as shipping and international trade.

Nick Thomas, Kennedys' senior partner, said the move was driven by client demand, as was the case with its other overseas offices in Hong Kong, Belfast and Auckland.

He said: 'Our expansion has always been opportunistic - there is not a grand strategy which says "Today Madrid, tomorrow Berlin".'
