Latin riddle
We are bidden by the Solicitor-General Harriet Harman on the front page (see [2002] Gazette, 10 January, 1) not to hide our lights under a bushel with regard to pro bono work.On that point of lights and bushels, isn't it time we stopped being coy about it by using the Latin tag? I was under the impression that we were in the midst of a plain English campaign.
In the profession, we understand the phrase, but I suspect the majority of the public does not.Let us be open and frank about it, and refer to it as what it is.
Let us call it free work.Janet Hopkins, partner, Lawson-West, Leicester
