Rules for advocacy, litigation and alternative dispute resolution

As part of the continuing review of the rules of professional conduct, the Law Society's regulation review working party has drafted a new set of rules dealing with advocacy, litigation and alternative dispute resolution.

These will replace the material currently contained in chapters 21 and 22 of the Guide to the Professional Conduct of Solicitors, 1999, eighth edition, including the Law Society's code for advocacy.

These rules are important to all solicitors whether they are engaged in private practice or employed in the private or public sector.

The working party would be greatly helped by a wide response but particularly from those involved in litigation or advocacy.

The proposed new rules are contained in a consultation document which appears on the Law Society's Web site at: www.lawsociety.org.uk

Alternatively, printed copies can be obtained from Carol Giles in Professional Ethics, Ipsley Court, Berrington Close, Redditch, Worcestershire B98 0TD; or DX 19114 Redditch; or e-mail: carol.giles@lawsociety.org.uk

The deadline for responses is 31 August 2002.
