London and Nottingham firm Lawfords is set to make an eighth of its staff redundant in the latest indication of the increasingly tight claimant personal injury market.

It is expected to make at least ten redundancies - four solicitors and six support staff - over the next nine months at its two offices. It is understood that Lawfords has analysed the volume and profitability of personal injury work and assessed that it is unlikely to increase in the short to medium term.

It intends to keep a personal injury practice, but to attempt to expand its more lucrative commercial work. The firm also has a strong employment practice. The cuts will reduce staff numbers to around 70.

The firm declined to say how many partners would be affected, but issued a statement describing the move as 'regrettable'. The statement said: 'Due to restructuring and the ongoing strategic review of the firm, this involves staff cutbacks in the personal injury department.'
