Lawyer in the NewsWho? Stephen Jones, 39-year-old partner in the clinical negligence department at 58-partner Manchester firm Pannone & Partners. Why is he in the news? Acted as the lawyer to the Alder Hey inquiry about the unauthorised storage of children's body parts.
The inquiry, which reported last month, caused widespread public shock with its claims that Professor Dick Van Velzen - the pathologist at the heart of the investigation - stored more than 105,000 organs from dead children in his care, with or without theirparents' consent. Background: BA Hons in Law at Queens College Cambridge, 1980-83, followed by Law Society Finals at Manchester Polytechnic in 1984.
He qualified with Pannone & Partners - then called Goldberg, Blackburn & Howard - and has been there ever since, with the exception of nine months at Russell Jones & Walker in 1991.
He became a partner in 1992.Route to the case: 'I've worked on many public inquiries - I represented the patients in the Ashworth hospital inquiry in 1999 - and the Department of Health invited the firm to tender for this position.'Thoughts on the case: 'This report will revolutionise the doctor/patient relationship - the crux of the findings is that there was a lack of information given to the parents of these children.
Even before the report was published, there has recently been a general movement in the medical profession towards more openness - an increasing willingness to give patients proper information - and the report gives heavy weight to this view.
Once I started work on this inquiry, I soon appreciated the depth of feeling involved, and the terrible experiences that all the parents went through.'Dealing with the media: 'I've been surprised at how the media has singled out Professor Van Velzen so much for personal criticism.
A careful reading of the report shows that many more people are involved with the events, and could have prevented them from happening.
We've had quite limited contact with the media, as the report was highly confidential before publication, and so no one involved could make any official comments.'Victoria MacCallum
