I read with interest the comments of Peter Steer, from Wilsons Solicitors, in your feature about charities (see [2009] Gazette, 25 June, 10).

He stated that he had four charity clients who were considering suing executors for their failure to obtain probate and sell investments promptly.

Without going into the merits or otherwise of such a claim, I shall be advising my clients who are considering leaving legacies to the large national charities that their executors may be at risk of such a claim.

Many of my clients feel that some of these charities have become too similar to commercial organisations, and the aggressive attitude demonstrated by Mr Steer and his clients is likely to reinforce this belief.
