RATE OF DECLINE
Criminal legal aid practitioners in England and Wales have had no increase in hourly rates since 1992. Last October, some of our rates were cut by as much as one-third. Now, under the proposals of the Carter review, our rates are being reduced further.
Scottish legal aid practitioners have also had a rates freeze since 1992 (but no cuts), so now they are getting increases of 8% for court work and 12% for all other work.
Why is the Law Society of England and Wales not shouting its head off about this shocking discrimination between English and Welsh lawyers on the one hand, and Scottish lawyers on the other?
