I wholeheartedly agree with the recent article by John Scriven (see [2004] Gazette, 17 December, 6). This country has long been celebrated for its liberal attitude, embracing the freedoms denied to so many others.


This includes the freedom to question, criticise or indeed follow other people's beliefs and opinions, religious or otherwise. The proposed offence would constrain this freedom, leading to ignorance, fear, and even greater religious tension and intolerance.
