It was gratifying to see the Gazette editorial on solicitors in local government realising that we make a contribution in our own right, which is worthy of mention and praise (see [2006] Gazette, 23 February, 13). Regrettably, the usual comments reported about us are concerned with our external arrangements procuring services from the private sector.
The in-house solicitor in local government is alive and kicking (well supported by our Law Society-recognised group, Solicitors in Local Government) and doing the vast majority of legal work that our organisations require to a high standard. Those of us who manage in local authorities are committed to developing the skills and expertise of our staff to ensure that a career in local government is rewarding and fulfilling - and that we provide the bulk of legal services to our local authorities.
