London calling for caped crusader

A curious triple gay wedding? An Olympic medal ceremony for the most outlandish outfit involving gold braiding and/or ermine? A refugee from Trumpton? Alas, no.

The more prosaic explanation is the election of the new Lord Mayor of London, barrister Gavyn Arthur, who is pictured here flanked by two aldermen.

Rather than introducing congestion charges and attempting to sort out the tube, the Lord Mayor's role is a much more civilised one than his near-namesake - he is the head of the corporation of London and acts as an ambassador for the City of London.

But is he as red as Ken? Well, his ermine-lined cape certainly is.

And more to the point, what is the chap to the right at the back getting up to?
