I disagree with AJ Ponting's letter (see [2006] Gazette, 19 January, 12). At this time - as perhaps never before - I want the leader of my profession to feel free to stand up to government. I do not want the President of the Law Society to be (even subconsciously) concerned about the possible effects his or her words may have with respect to honours.
