Your write-up of the Software Solutions guide 2005 (see [2005] Gazette, 10 February, 11) failed to make clear that entry into the guide is paid for advertising - at a cost rumoured to be in the region of £10,000. To say that 'some 16 suppliers made this year's guide' is not therefore the whole picture.
Referrers can receive referral fees from solicitors but must disclose the payments to their clients; nowhere does the guide, your article or the Law Society President's covering letter (sent out with the guide), make clear that the Law Society has received significant referral fees for the endorsements in the guide.
The nature of the guide and its endorsement of the specified suppliers might therefore be considered misleading.
