The Legal Services Complaints Commissioner 'has made it clear that she is minded to fine' the Law Society for failing to meet the targets in its complaints-handling plan for 2005/06, the council heard last week. Consumer Complaints Board chairman Professor Shamit Saggar said the Society had suggested that Zahida Manzoor follow the example of water regulator Ofwat - which obtained a legally binding commitment from Thames Water to spend an extra £150 million on fixing leaky pipes rather than issuing a fine that would go to the Treasury - but said 'it doesn't seem to chime' with her. However, Prof Saggar said there was an 'increased prospect' of agreeing the 2006/07 plan, and said there was now a 'genuine dialogue' with Ms Manzoor. In May, she fined the Law Society £250,000 after branding the initial plan inadequate.
