Obiter is regularly impressed by the modesty of solicitors (or perhaps their public relations staff).

An example from this week's post was a press release hailing the appointment of Mark Adcock, managing partner of Lichfield and West Bromwich-based Adcocks solicitors, as a non-executive director of St Giles Hospice (Promotions) Ltd.

This non-profit making charity claims to operate the most successful charity lottery in the UK, and last year earned 794,000 for cancer sufferers and other seriously ill people living north of Birmingham.

The secret of its success? Mr Adcock says: 'St Giles Hospital Promotions directors are affectionately known as "thin cats", as we're delighted to serve without receiving remuneration or expenses - while National Lottery "fat cat" directors award themselves huge bonuses.'
