Private PracticePartnersMagic circle firm Clifford Chance heads this week's round-up with 38 promotions to its world-wide partnership, bringing its total to 670.
Fourteen of these appointments are in the London office:l Corporate - Nicholas Elverston, Sarah Jones, Adrian Levy, Tim Wright and Joel Ziff;l Finance - Michael Bates, Ranbir Hunjan and Emma Casdagli;l Litigation and dispute resolution - Jeremy Kosky and Martin Saunders;l Real estate - Richard Margree and Suzy Stewart;l Capital markets - Ruth Stevenson and Laura Stuart.The firm has also recruited three intellectual property partners for its New York office.
Eric Lobenfeld, Drew Wintringham and Ira Schaefer join from US firm Chadbourne & Parke.Nine promotions in the London and Paris offices of Richards Butler take total partners to 109.
The City-based appointments are Philip Allford, Michael Ewart and Andrew Herring (corporate & banking); Alex Burton and Susannah Williams (commercial disputes); Richard Gunn and Nicholas Woo (shipping).
Insurance specialists Berrymans Lace Mawer has announced five new partners, three promotions and two recruits.
In London, David Brown and Helen Daniel are both promoted and Jason Maley joins from Birmingham firm Buller Jeffries.
In the Manchester office, Chris Downey has been promoted to partner and Jason Nash recruited from north-west firm Weightmans.Also in Manchester, Pannone & Partners has appointed seven equity partners, taking its total to 40 equity partners and 63 overall: David Leviten (property), Liz Cowell (family), James Farn (corporate), Trish Noon, Richard Scorer, Debra Woolfson and Carol Brooks Johnson (all personal injury).A management rejig at 33-partner London and Oxford firm Boodle Hatfield has seen corporate partner Chris Putt appointed managing partner.
The chairman of the firm's management committee, he is the first person to hold the managing partner role since 1995.
He will be supported by business unit heads drawn from each department and responsible for their practice areas in both locations as the London and Oxford departments merge.
The heads are: Richard Maughan (property), David Way (tax and financial planning), Jonathan Brooks (corporate) and Simon Fitzpatrick (litigation).Elsewhere in London, Christopher Potts is to relinquish his role as senior partner of Middleton Potts after ten years to return to fee-earning full-time.
His position at the City firm goes to founder partner David Lucas, a litigator.
The firm is to recruit a chief executive officer to undertake administration.Specialist private client firm Currey & Co has made up Mary Black as its eighth partner.Stringer Saul has signed up technology partner Roger Loosley from fellow City firm Fladgate Fielder.Kent firm Cripps Harries Hall has two more partners in its dispute resolution department with the promotion of Myles McIntosh and Edward Weeks.Bournemouth-based Lester Aldridge has recruited Rosemary Parr as a corporate partner from Taunton firm Pardoes.Peter Woodhouse has been promoted to partner in the commercial department of Bristol firm Cartwrights.Private Practice Associates/AssistantsUS firm Orrick Herrington & Sutcliffe has recruited Jide Bada from Allen & Overy to work as a banking associate in its London office.Employment specialist Denham Bell is leaving Doberman Horsman in Middlesbrough to become an associate in the City office of Irwin Mitchell.Joining Roger Loosley in moving from Fladgate Fielder to the IT team at Stringer Saul (see above) is assistant Jane Elkington.Corporate lawyer Miranda Chapple has left City firm Lovells to become an associate in the Chichester office of Thomas Eggar Church Adams.Bristol firm Veale Wasbrough has added Tony Williams to its planning team.
He joins as an associate from Chester firm Aaron & Partners.Elsewhere in Bristol, in addition to a new partner (see above), Cartwrights has promoted Peter Angliss and Andrew Williams to associates and recruited Julie Norris and Simon Exley as solicitors from London firm Fairmays and Thatcher & Hallam in Bath respectively.Property solicitor Gary Bell is moving from Hill Dickinson to the Liverpool office of Davies Wallis Foyster.Lupton Fawcett in Leeds has recruited two lawyers: commercial litigation solicitor Craig Burman joins after qualifying in New Zealand in 1992, while Chris Preston swaps Harrogate firm Raworths for the family law department.
IN-HOUSEThe Economist Group has promoted Oscar Grut to group general counsel.
He will take full responsibility for the provision of legal services world-wide.
He replaces Tony Wales, who is leaving legal work to become director of Economist TV, a new brand product for the group.
OTHERAlso moving to US firm Orrick Herrington & Sutcliffe (see above) is Sonnia Kaufmann, who is appointed 'of counsel'.
She previously specialised in Asian restructuring at Chase Bank.
JUDICIARYRichard Hudson, a partner at Grimsby firm Grange Wintringham, has been appointed a district judge on the Midland Circuit.
