The Charity Tribunal launches next week with unique powers setting it apart from other tribunals - and with solicitor Alison McKenna, head of the charities team at Wiltshire-based Wilsons, newly appointed as its first president.
The new tribunal, which will hear up to 50 cases a year, has powers to consider generic points of charity law, as well as appeals and reviews of particular Charity Commission decisions, such as when a body has been refused charitable status or a trustee has been accused of mismanagement. The Attorney General, in her constitutional role as Protector of Charity, will also be able to intervene directly in any proceeding before the Charity Tribunal.
