The government has announced it is to cut down on the number of public authorities allowed access to telecommunications traffic data for crime fighting purposes.
New measures released by the Home Office this week also aim to restrict the type of information public authorities have access to, limit the reasons why they would be able to do so and ensure only senior officials can see the data.
An independent commissioner will be appointed to carry out regular checks on public bodies to ensure the process is not abused.
