Non-lawyer partners of law firms will not be checked for their training and competence, under plans unveiled by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA).
Though the SRA intends to subject potential non-lawyer partners to a similar character and suitability test as used for would-be solicitors, the assessment of their training and competence will be left to the lawyer managers.
The consultation is part of the SRA's preparation for legal disciplinary partnerships, which will allow partnership with non-lawyers.
However, the SRA is considering whether any restrictions should be placed on the activities of non-lawyer partners over and above those imposed by statute, such as in relation to a firm's client account.
