Rarely if ever have I been so incensed by a Law Society directive as that against firms charging for unsubstantiated complaints (see [2004] Gazette, 5 February, 34).

In the complaint-encouraged culture with which solicitors - and others - have been burdened for many years, we are now being faced with the prospect of complainants being told that they have nothing to lose, regardless of the merits.

It does not need an Einstein to work out that these will now proliferate.
