I was intrigued to read that legal aid forms are being rejected on the basis that the forms had been completed using the wrong type of ink (see [2006] Gazette, 12 October, 3). I think I can go one better.
Some time ago, I made a claim for payment of a not substantial legal aid bill to the old Legal Aid Board. It was rejected, after the usual delay of several weeks, because I had not signed on the dotted line where indicated. The officials were right. I had not signed 'on' the dotted line. Somewhat clumsily, a part of my signature had strayed below the dotted line, as a result of which half my signature was above and the other half below the dotted line.
Ever since, I have made sure that I sign the forms well above the dotted line. I am about to retire, rather relieved that I do not have to have a row of differently coloured pens, all with various memoranda endorsed as to which pen to use on which occasion.
