The Law Society standards board's study missed the point in relation to referral fees (see [2005] Gazette, 12 May, 1). I have been asking the Society two questions since last year, namely: Why was lifting the ban a good idea? And how can it be in the public interest?
No answer has been given to either question. Probably because there is not a good answer. Fortunately, we have the astute and independent Master of the Rolls making the final decision.
